Zero grounds for Mosque at Ground Zero

Written by Sharon Alley-Calone

What strange weather we are experiencing in California, 105 degrees to 78 degrees in a nano- second. Jeez Louise! I guess when all is said and done, just about everything in our little world is a bit out of the norm. My sincere thanks to those that responded to my column last month, not to belabor the issue but, please note, that my column is just that, my opinion, you certainly don’t have to agree with me.

If you’re like me, you’re probably sick of hearing all the political nonsense about the illegal aliens and closing our borders.

Summer is my favorite time of year.  We swim, ski, fish, go boating, floating, play baseball, wake board, trap shoot, walk  and all the fun sun stuff.

I thought the warm weather would never arrive, but indeed it has.

Spring is a time of renewal and I’m happy to report that our very own Stockton Asparagus Festival has once again renewed our community’s charity coffers. What great weather we enjoyed for the 25th annual fundraiser! This type of an event is exactly what communities need to fund the non-profit organizations struggling in trying times. A BIG THANK YOU to all those that volunteered and continue to do so, year after year.

Congratulations to Pamela Eibeck, UOP’s 24th president. We haven’t seen a ceremony like this in 15 years, we wish you much success. See Page 30. Sarah Palin will serve as the guest of honor at the June 25th California State University, Stanislaus, 50th Anniversary gala. See Page 34.

For those of you that had the pleasure of seeing the Annie Jr. play presented by the students from Claudia Landeen Elementary School, BRAVO! My 9 year old niece, Lauren, invited me to see her perform in the play. She was a cute little orphan and so excited that her good friend, 8 year old Isabelle, was the star that shined as ANNIE JR. What a delight to see all the kids perform. Please turn to our Out & About section on Page 30 to see a picture.

During our editorial board meeting in Modesto last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Tom Sandman, interim dean of the School of Business at California State University, Stanislaus. He informed us that the enrollment at the university’s Stockton campus was down by 40 percent.

I thought about this for a nano second and asked if the school might consider launching a psych-tech program to train students for the planned prison medical center in French Camp. In approximately three years, the facility will need roughly 450 psych techs, as well as many other nurses.

After hearing Dr. Hazel Hill, dean of Workforce and Economic Development at Delta College, speak during our Editorial meeting in Stockton the day before, I felt that it would be quite an undertaking for Delta College to gear up, with limited space and funding in such a short time, (although Dr. Hill is willing to undertake the task).
